Retail around the world has been on the front lines more than once in clashes with changing economic conditions. The online shopping market froze when the dot-com bubble burst in the early 2000s. The failure of pets.com, which became the face of the technology debacle, showed that at the time the infrastructure and technological capabilities were insufficient to support online retailing in the way it was intended.
